Social Value in Action: G3 Systems in Lagos.

At G3 Systems, social value isn’t just a policy it’s based on sustainable action.

During our ongoing construction project at the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos, Nigeria, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside two remarkable individuals: Mutiu, our dedicated driver, and Balikis, our tireless site cleaner.

Both were originally employed by subcontractors and, despite their full-time commitment, were trapped by Nigeria’s minimum wage earning approximately $44/month, far below the cost of living.  Like many in Lagos, 90% of their wage was spent on basic food, with little left for transport or rent.  Life was exhausting, with days beginning at 5am and ending late in the evening.

We believed they deserved better.

G3 took direct action. We offered both direct full employment with significantly higher wages above the basic costs of living.  We adjusted their working hours to a manageable five-day week, and provided secure accommodation with electricity, kitchen and ensuite facilities. They now have access to two full meals a day, weekly shopping budgets and critically some time and affordable transport to visit family on weekends using our corporate Uber account.

But we wanted to do more to help deliver future sustainability.  Balikis is a trained seamstress who had to pause her studies due to lack of funds.  She now has a sewing machine, workspace and materials to pursue her passion again. We are funding the completion of her fashion course so she can earn more income in the future.  Mutiu is very dedicated in his driver role and works tirelessly to keep our staff safe.  He is being supported in acquiring a vehicle to run his own local driving business after the project ends.

Meaningful, sustainable action is what social value means to G3 Systems, creating lasting change, recognising individual potential and giving people more than a job. We seek to give them opportunity, dignity and a better quality of life.
